Cognitive flexibility helps an animal survive in unpredictable environments. Some scientists believe this flexibility comes from associative learning, associating actions with rewards, while others think animals possess complex cognition which includes causal reasoning, perspective taking and more.
Aim
- Design a test that would differentiate between the two competing theories
- Test if dogs could apply causal reasoning in a novel situation or if their behavior was better described by associative learning
