Four female bottlenose dolphins at Kolmården Wildlife Park were trained through positive reinforcement to perform maximal respiratory efforts (chuffs) on demand. The dolphins participated voluntarily under relaxed conditions.
Spirometry measurements were done every 1–4 weeks for a year, and the spirometry included 18 variables of respiratory function.
Morning respiratory rate was evaluated alongside activity levels, which were ranked from 1 (calm) to 3 (very active).
Daily symptom recordings of coughs.
Blood samples were taken at least every three months to check for inflammation.
